Taiwan & T-Life Hostel!

Next time you’re planning a trip, consider visiting Taiwan! Make sure Taipei, Taichung and T-Life Hostel are on your itinerary!

Working with T-Life

In January/February of 2020, I had the privilege of working with T-Life Hostel in Taichung on a photography project. I photographed the ambiance of the hostel and its community, along with the bright colorful city that houses it. T-Life is nothing short of a family. They are a diverse group that welcomes everyone with open arms. Its green theme vibrancy wakes you with energy. The walls are doused in graffiti-like murals from artists around the world. At T-Life you can relax, make friends, eat a lunch box from the vendor just outside or learn Muay Thai!

I am so grateful to have met so many wonderful people. Rebbeca, Rita, Stefan, Manon, Gary, Bear, Tina, and Emily! (Not pictured: Eason and Kris).

Taichung Highlights!

The bus stop is only a few blocks away and will take you throughout Taichung and beyond. Did you know that the first 10km on public transportation in Taichung is free? Even after that, it won’t cost you much. You can easily access it with a prepaid card from a nearby grocery store or 7-Eleven!

My favorite sights from Taichung were I’m Talato (gelato shop), the Gaomei Wetlands, and the National Taichung Theater!

Taipei Highlights!

Fun fact: Taipei is the home of the former tallest building in the world; Taipei 101. It held the title for several years before being outdone by Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

My friend Rita and I decided to take a bus trip from Taichung to Taipei for a couple of days. I am SO GLAD we did. Spontaneous adventures never let me down!

Within the couple of days we were there we viewed Liberty Square (自由廣場), hiked Xiangshan Trail (Elephant Mountain) to catch the sunset with views of the city and Taipei 101, explored the night markets, had a spa session and visited the natural hot springs.

P.S. Taiwanese Cuisine!

Bubble tea, hot pots, pineapple bread, and barbecue are just a few of the things I could eat for the rest of my life. I will return to Taiwan with the motive that I didn’t get to taste everything it has to offer! Send me off into a night market and I’ll return with a loosened notch on my belt. (Rita did get me to eat pigs blood but I declined fried chicken feet.)

Candid Photography

A candid photograph is defined as a photograph captured without creating a posed appearance.

My favorite photographs are the ones that are not planned. The raw and honest moments of someone’s life. To be able to capture the humor, love and minor conflict of the moment is something people appreciate.

They aren’t always the photos you’ll blow up on a canvas and hang in your living room. They can be out of frame with a tad of motion blur, but they’re genuine.

The more people and the more interaction, the better the candid photo!

Toddlers are great candidates for candid photos with their sudden gazes of wonder, giggles or tears. Pets are another subject that steal the scene with their waves of excitement and curiosity!

4. Single portrait shoots = Laughing from the conversation. The wind blowing and sending chills through your body. Mocking your mom for telling you how to pose. And when that flower is just a little too funny!

3. Couples/Friends = Bickering about a pose, real-time reactions of proposals and laughs at jokes you both only understand!

2. Families = The chaos of getting a group to to pose!

1. Events = Dancing, singing, eating, laughing and celebrating a life milestone. Events are absolutely prime for facial expressions you’ve never seen your face do!

Behind The Scenes

Recently, I’ve made a point to capture behind the scenes photos and clips of my work. It’s an amusing way to see myself in action. The snapshots tell a story and add more reality to the sessions. It’s rewarding to see the contrast of a quick iPhone photo, compared to the final project.

I often find myself climbing up on odd surfaces or laying down in the dirt. There’s a lot of squatting, army crawling and balance. Photoshoots are a quad workout! I’ve torn my pants and scratched my hands. I’ve stood in waist-high water, shivering on a February morning.

You also get to see the chaos and the odd posing the models are doing. Thanks to camera angles and cropping, the end result hides the reality of the posture that took place!

Why Photography?

Photography is a passion I have felt since I was a child. From trying to grab the camera as a baby, to taking pictures of my dolls, I’ve always had a desire for photos. I love capturing people and places. It’s a form of expression. It has the power to freeze a moment forever. Preserve it so it won’t be lost. You can time travel with photographs.

I adore portraits. It’s rewarding when people are excited about a photo of their face or their moment. There will always be a demand for personal photoshoots. The jobs and niches are endless. Brand content. Senior and family portraits. Business headshots. Modeling portfolios. Bridal and romance.

Photography has introduced me to amazing people. Clients have become friends. The conversations and laughs exchanged throughout photo sessions leave me feeling inspired and confident. I have photographed weddings, religious ceremonies and proposals. It is heartwarming to be welcomed into significant life events.

I’ve also taken an interest in the art of capturing places. Inspiring people to see the world. Photojournalism has the ability to educate about culture and the environment. It can raise awareness for a cause or shift thousands of perspectives.

My intention is to continue growing and networking!
